What do Painters and Decorators do?
Essentially, painters and decorators apply paint, wallpaper and other coatings to prepared surfaces.
But they also assess each project, liaise with clients and other tradespeople, decide on materials required and evaluate the length
and cost of each job.
Projects are varied and can be based in private homes, offices, shops, construction sites and other commercial and industrial buildings.
So how do you train for the job?
The best way is through an apprenticeship, working under the guidance of an experienced painter and decorator.
The apprenticeship programme provides you with the skills and knowledge to springboard you career into any area of the painting and decorating industry.
90 percent of the training is practical on-the-job experience, while the remaining 10 percent is usually attendance at block training
courses at a local polytechnic.
You can also complete the New Zealand National Certificate qualification at the same time, which will broaden you career opportunities
even further.
How long is an apprenticeship?
There are apprenticeships available in :-
Painting (Core qualification) 5000 hours
With elective strands in:
- Specialised Coatings 2000 hours
- Industrial Coatings 2000 hours
